BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

My artwork reflects a life-long preoccupation with the “stitch” from early childhood hand embroidery to a current fascination with the machine stitch as a sculptural element used to create complex textures and forms.
My parents and grandparents were artists, and my mom and dad’s love of painting fused with my love of fabrics early on, so that, at times, it seemed only natural to stitch what I had painted. I am especially intrigued with the richness of color and magnification of patterns in nature and have a curiosity in finding ways to convey this through my fiber art. My interest in fiber techniques has changed and evolved as my art developed since I first began exhibiting in juried shows in 1974. It has been a process of building upon previous experiences and works to expand and develop new ways of creating. Over the years I have exhibited paintings, batiks, shibori, fabric collages, art quilts and embroidered dimensional pieces. Teaching fabric painting workshops fulfills my desire to “pass on” a love of painting and fabrics by conveying to others a joyful, expressive journey exploring nature’s wealth of patterns and textures. After recently earning a M.S. in Creative Art Therapy, I am currently an Artist-in-Residence at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, creating artwork bedside with patients or in waiting areas with family and caregivers. Memberships include The American Art Therapy Association, The Society for the Arts in Healthcare, Surface Design Association, and the Buffalo Society of Artists. In addition to numerous national and international exhibitions, my work is represented in public and private collections in the US as well as Canada, China, South Korea, The Philippines, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and India.
